Long-form Improv performance depends a great deal on the 2-person scene: who are these characters? why are we seeing them? How do they feel about each other? How do we feel about them? These are questions the audience will ask and that we need to answer – and find ways to make the scene funny. That is the essence of Level 2.
What will I learn?
Level 2 will teach you how to create a scene with two improvised characters which is honest, sometimes cute, sometimes tragic, sometimes joyous, but always funny to watch. You will learn special techniques which look at finding internal motivation, wants, status and physicality so a scene always works, as well as how to add to a scene so it becomes increasingly funny. You learn how to link scenes and make connections to heighten the humour even more.
What will I do in this class?
All of the exercises in Level 2 concentrate on making you a better scene player. Much of the time you will be exploring in pairs the techniques that make for a successful 2-person scene: humanity, relationships, wants, making choices, vulnerability, the flaw, heightening… This level also requires you to become more analytical of the comic process, so whatever you do on stage is a deliberate choice with the aim of building the scene to a comedic climax.
Who can take this class?
Level 2 is only available as a continuation of the L1 ( A & B) courses and therefore has the same age requirements (minimum 18 years).
How long is this class?
Level 2 is a 6-week course with each session lasting 3 hours.
What do I need to bring?
All you need to bring with you is clothing that you can move easily in, and notepad and pen to take down the gems of knowledge from your teacher, and an open mind.
Will there be a performance?
There will be a demonstration at the end of the course which will be only to an invited audience of fellow improvisers and your family and friends.
Why is this class important?
Level 2 is the cornerstone of long-form Improv performance. Without understanding the processes taught here, you will not be able to create comedic 2-person scenes consistently. The level 2 takes all the guesswork out of scene creation and equips you with the techniques that you will use in your Improv forever
