One of the amazing things about Improv is that it is literally for everyone. It’s a great way to push yourself and push the boundaries of your comfort zone – but in a positive and supportive environment. While at the same time having fun.
At its heart, Improvisation is about working as a team to create funny scenes in the moment without any preparation.
“What’s the value of this?” you might ask. Well, to be able to do this consistently takes incredible communication, teamwork and supportive skills. But unlike the military or the office – OUR LEARNING PROCESS IS AMAZING FUN!
On all ICC courses, we guarantee to increase and improve your awareness, confidence and creativity, and enable you to be comfortable being playful, open and supportive in any life situation… and you’ll learn how to do all of this in a positive, safe and fun environment. This confidence and these interactive and creative skills will help you attain your highest goals in life.
Each week we will introduce you to new exercises and challenges to help you become more aware, to listen harder, to connect more with people, to develop your teamwork skills, and to thrive on being supportive and supported in your creativity.
Week 1: You will get to meet and learn about your teammates, and do some fundamental communication and teamwork exercises to get you comfortable working together while introducing you to the basics of the improv philosophies.
Week 2: You will be introduced to the Improv concept of ‘Yes, and…’ – accepting other people’s ideas and creatively building on them with your own ideas.
Week 3: Concentrates on listening and helping each other to create strong comic scene foundations
Week 4: Encourages you to accept and ‘run with’ other people’s creative inputs to help you be more creative yourself
Week 5: Investigates being physically aware and comfortable when presenting yourself publicly as well as playing with the idea of finding characters for your improvised scenes
Week 6: Is a round-up of all the skills you have learned so far and how you can start to implement them to create amusing scenes together.

What will I learn?
In Improv Level 1A, you start to learn the skills needed to create strong improvised scenes. Some of these skills include learning agreement, active listening, building on ideas, playing truthfully and smartly, working as an ensemble, giving and taking focus, object work, and the concept of “yes, and.”
What will I do in this class?
You will do a lot of different fun exercises to help you think and work better as part of a team. You will also begin to understand the importance of supporting each other and being accepting of other’s ideas. You will then start to work on the basics of creating funny and fully improvised scenes.
Who can take this class?
Level 1A is best suited to adults above the age of 18, purely because we expect you to come with a bit of life experience that you can share. Purely for logistical reasons (our Training Centre is on the 2nd floor) you should be able-bodied.
How long is this class?
Level 1A is a 6-week course with each session lasting 3 hours – 18 hours in total.
Why is it called Level 1A?
The building blocks of improvisation are a complete set of skills that you will learn at the ICC Theatre, unfortunately those skills take longer than the Level 1A to learn, therefore we have level 1A + 1B that in total covers the material of our LEVEL 1. – By taking 1A you have actually only covered half of the fun in the basics of improv!
What do I need to bring?
All you need to bring with you is:
* clothing that you can move easily in
* a bottle of water if you think you will need refreshment, and
* an open mind and an eagerness to explore.
Will there be a performance?
Because this is your first step into the world of Improv, we don’t ask you to perform at the end of the Level 1A course.
Why is this class important?
All our students have different reasons for doing Improv: some want to perform comedy, some want to expand their social network, some want to prepare themselves for public speaking, some just want to rediscover the notion of ‘play’ and to take their mind away from the rigours or work. But we promise that you’ll become far more creative, attentive, and open to everyone around you, both in and out of class. Sometimes you just need to reward yourself with a bit of fun!
