What is Improv?
Improv, impro, or improvisation, has its roots in 1920s America where it was developed to help immigrant children from many different backgrounds communicate, understand and bond with each other, and work together. It has since blossomed into a whole creative art form which also has become the career backbone of many Hollywood and international stars, as well as a host of very successful global business leaders.
Who is Improv for?
Children and adults alike – Everyone can benefit from taking an improv class.
Improvisation can specifically benefit your child by building on the natural creativity and ability to make stuff up that kids have – and apply it to help them develop essential social and stage skills through a wide variety of very fun games and exercises, which make them more confident, kind and supportive of others. What is unique to improv is that it is about the team more than the individual. A skill that are ever more needed in today’s world of teamwork.
The age range for these ICC Kids improv classes is 9 to 12 years. (Teenagers are welcome to join our adult classes).
Millions of kids around the world already benefit from improv classes because it is a fun and challenging way for them to discover how to express themselves, how to be confident in new situations, and how to find their voice while appreciating other people.
Kids have amazing imaginations, and they have the ability to ‘pretend’, which most adults lose as they grow up and have to be …well, adults.
What do they learn?
At ICC Theatre we teach everyone the fundamentals of improv:
– Build on each other’s ideas (the philosophy of “Yes, And”)
– Do not judge yourself or others
– Believe in yourself and your ideas
– Find value in mistakes
– Constructive co-creation
– Listen actively
This may sound advanced, but it’s what children do when they play a lot of the time anyway. We teach them to make these decisions consciously and use them as a foundation for behaviour and communication in all aspects of their life not only on a stage.
These are also proven skills that we have been teaching in our adult classes over the past 6 years and which will help your child to be more empathic, open, sharing, creative, spontaneous, confident, team-minded and adventurous – all within the framework of having fun with friends.
What happens in the class?
Each course is taught with the same group of children each week, and we teach through fun, engaging group games and exercises. The course is conducted mostly through active exercises involving all participants or divided into smaller groups for shorter periods during the classes.
Our goal is to make the course comfortably challenging for the kids as part of a team, and in a psychologically safe environment. Our qualified professional teachers (which also perform at the ICC Theatre) ensure that every child is treated equally and constantly given a focus for all their creative energy.
At the same time, we take great care to understand the individual challenges of each child so they always feel included and a vital part of the team.
Where do the classes take place?
All classes take place in the centre of Copenhagen. Either in our cosy ICC theatre on Frederiksholms Kanal (just over the river from Christiansborg) or in our dedicated ICC Training Centre at Løngangstræde, just around the corner from the our Theatre.
When do classes take place?
We try and schedule classes continuously all year round – most often during the day on Saturdays and/or Sundays, and during vacation periods we offer intensive courses over 4 consecutive daytimes. You can always find all the upcoming classes on this page.
